Pazo de Pompeán

Pazo de Pompeán is located in the village of the same name, in the parish of Santa María de Paradela, in the municipality of Meis. Its origins date back to the Early Modern period, and the complex preserves features from different stages between the 16th and 18th centuries.

The building has an L-shaped layout and a distinctive battlemented tower rising at the corner of the complex. Its façade preserves heraldic elements associated with some of the families historically linked to the property, including the Barba de Figueroa and Vázquez Bazán de Camba families.

The complex also includes several buildings and features associated with life on the estate, including a chapel, a traditional stone granary, a dovecote and other structures set within an extensive rural property.

Pazo de Pompeán is also linked to Galicia's contemporary history through Pío Cabanillas Gallas (1923–1991), a Galician lawyer and politician who held several ministerial posts during the final years of the Franco regime and Spain's transition to democracy. Pompeán was his family residence in Meis, and he remained closely connected to the estate throughout his life.

For its architecture, historical background and links with notable families and personalities, Pazo de Pompeán is one of the outstanding examples of civil heritage in the municipality of Meis.
