The first evidence found of this convent dates from the 17th century. However, a manuscript found in the Diocese of Lugo suggests that construction began before 1650.
Its history dates back to the 7th century, when a hermit who had adopted a life of isolation and penitence was found dead on the Hill of Carrio. A chapel dedicated to Saint Cyprian was built in his memory, although it is now popularly known as O Corpiño.
The hermit’s body disappeared after Arab invasions and the chapel was destroyed, which resulted in pilgrimage to the site as an act of faith. Afterwards, the parish priest ordered a sculpture of the Virgin and the rebuilding of the church-sanctuary.
