International Descent of the Minho
Canoeing down the largest river in Galicia
Hundreds of paddlers take part in the International Descent in Tui.
A tide of paddlers gives colour to the largest river in Galicia in the month of August. The border town of Tui hosts the International Descent of the Miño, a multitudinous and colourful sporting event in which hundreds of professional and amateur paddlers take part and which is recognised as a Festival of Tourist Interest in Galicia.
The competition for professionals covers a distance of 17 kilometres between Salvaterra de Miño and Tui, and this is joined by the Popular Descent of the Miño, aimed at amateur canoeists and covering a distance of 7 kilometres. Sport and the enjoyment of the fascinating landscape of the banks of the Miño are combined in this festival, in addition to a popular pilgrimage on the banks of Caldelas and a gastronomic festival that takes place in the town centre.
The origins of the festival date back to the 19th century, when barge and boat races were organised on the river Minho. This tradition lasted over time and ended up introducing canoes into the competition. The Kayak Tudense Club has been organising this event since 1979.
