Surfing in paradise

An ideal territory for surfers. These are the Rías Baixas, where you will find waves of all levels in spectacular spots such as A Lanzada, Patos or the south of the province. Live the adventure on your board!

Are you an ace surfer, are you seduced by riding the waves and are you waiting for the perfect opportunity to get on the board for the first time? Whatever the case, the beaches of As Rías Baixas offer you all the options to spend hours of fun in the water.

The calm sea in summer is ideal for learning in one of the schools in the province of Pontevedra, with instructors who will guide you in your beginnings. In other seasons, experienced surfers perform acrobatics in the water with real skill. In the absence of scales, wetsuits are essential for getting into the sea and enjoying the best waves.

The magic of A Lanzada

On the isthmus of A Lanzada, surfers have three areas with different characteristics. The extremes, A Lanzada and Cantalapiedra, are ideal for beginners and even for perfecting technique. Aeropuerto, in the middle, is more suitable for experienced surfers. The beach is located in a magical setting, full of legends, with one of the most important forts in Galicia, a charming chapel and fabulous views of A Illa de Ons.

On the north coast, between Sanxenxo and O Grove, you will find the impressive beach of A Lanzada, one of the most famous in Galicia, in the open sea and with waves much appreciated by surfers and lovers of water sports in general. Its 2.5 kilometres of sandy beach offer alternatives for all levels.

Patos is one of the ideal spots in the Vigo estuary; and the coast of Oia attracts the most experienced sportsmen and women.

In Sanxenxo there are the beaches of Foxos, of medium level, and Fontenla, with an XXL wave that breaks in big storms, more suitable for advanced surfers. To the south, Montalvo, one of the best surfing beaches in Galicia, offers a powerful wave that breaks with swell. Also in the same municipality,Canelas is suitable for all levels; and Os Mortos, in Areas, for experts.

In the Vigo estuary, one of the best beaches for surfing at all levels is Patos, in Nigrán. Along with Prado, the quality of the waves at both beaches is magnificent for beginners. On the right, where A Cala is formed, with optimum conditions, there is a short, forceful wave. In this area, the Patos peak, with right-hand waves, offers the best wave in the estuary. Another of the classics, with left-handed waves, constant and of great quality, is the peak of Monteferro.

The southern coast of the province is one of the ideal areas for surfing, an area recommended only for experienced surfers. To the south of the inlet of the monastery of Santa María de Oia we find an enclave of high difficulty, with south wind, fast waves and rocky coastline. In this area, the waves of San Francisco, Cantos and F3, or the Salvaje, are a real challenge.
