Albariño Fair

Cambados surrenders to albariño

The town celebrates a multitudinous festival in honour of the "prince" of Galician wines

Anyone who has ever taken part in the Albariño Festival will undoubtedly have memorable memories of their time in Cambados, because Albariño is, above all, fun. The "prince" of Galician wines brings together every year thousands of people ready to experience a great party, where wine culture is combined with lots of music and the characteristic summer atmosphere of As Rías Baixas at the beginning of August.

The festival is concentrated in different places in the centre of Cambados, all of them close to each other, so that you can walk from one place to another during the day. On the A Calzada promenade there are the stalls of the different wineries of the D. O. Rías Baixas.O. Rías Baixas , which offer their wines from midday until well into the early hours of the morning, and food stalls are also set up; in the town hall square there is a popular street party, while in the monumental Fefiñáns square the big concerts are held, normally free of charge.

The Albariño Festival attracts a very varied public profile, from local and regional residents to holidaymakers, political authorities and celebrities. The participation of the local residents is particularly evident in the youth clubs, who wear T-shirts with slogans designed for the occasion. It is common to see the groups with their glasses around their necks, always ready for another wine tasting. The institutions are present at the appointment of the Ladies and Gentlemen of Honour of the Serenissimo Chapter of Albariño , which takes place in Fefiñáns and which brings together every year distinguished personalities.

Another important event in the programme is the tasting competition, organised by the Regulatory Council of the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin, in which the best Albariño brands of the year are chosen. There are also exhibitions, sports competitions and workshops related to the world of wine.

The origin of the festival

The origin of the celebration is very spontaneous. In 1953 two winemakers challenged each other to compare their wines, and they did so by means of a wine-tasting competition which, over the years, would give rise to the festival as we know it today. What was once an intimate, festive gathering has become a large-scale event that attracts visitors from all over Spain and abroad. The first poster for the festival arrived in 1958, making it the oldest of all the wine festivals in Spain, after the Jerez grape harvest.

The Cambados Albariño Festival has been recognised as a Festival of Tourist Interest in Galicia since 1977. In 1990 it was declared a Festivity of National Tourist Interest and since 2018 it has the distinction of Festivity of International Tourist Interest .

What to do in Cambados

The Albariño Festival is a magnificent occasion to enjoy the many benefits of Cambados. Its old quarter is classified as a Historic-Artistic Site and its monument par excellence is the stately Plaza de Fefiñáns.

If we walk towards the upper part of the town, on the slopes of A Pastora hill, we find the ruins of the church of Santa Mariña Dozo (16th century), one of those places where time seems to have stopped.

Cambados also has a seafaring origin that can be seen in the neighbourhood of San Tomé, where the narrow streets lead to the sea. The remains of the medieval tower of San Sadurniño can be found there.

Among the different plans, we would like to highlight two: to visit the Ethnographic and Wine Museum, which explains the origin of the vines in the land of O Salnés, as well as the methods of cultivation and the grape harvest and its impact on this land; And to sit at the table, accompanying a glass of Albariño with, for example, some delicious scallops prepared in the Cambados style, undoubtedly the star gastronomic product of the local cuisine.
