Discover Vigo from Porta do Sol
A tour through the streets of the historic centre of Galicia's largest city, crowned with fabulous views of the estuary from O Castro hill.
The Porta do Sol, presided over by the original sculpture of the Siren and located at Vigo's kilometre zero, serves as a compass to walk through the city centre from the historic quarter to the top of O Castro hill, with splendid views over the estuary. In this rewarding walk, it is essential to stroll through the Old Town, going down from A Princesa square to O Berbés, by the sea, the origin of the old fishing village now converted into a fishing and naval power.
You can enjoy a stroll along Calle de Os Cesteiros, Calle Real or Calle de las Oysters, where it is worth stopping to taste the tasty mollusc that gives it its name. The co-cathedral of Santa María, known as the collegiate church, houses the image of the Cristo de la Victoria, the city's main religious symbol.
Galician art
For art lovers, a visit to the Francisco Fernández del Riego art gallery (on Abeleira Menéndez street) is a must. It exhibits a wide and valuable collection of contemporary Galician art by artists such as Laxeiro, Colmeiro, Quessada and Castelao, among others. Nature lovers should visit the visitor centre of the Parque Nacional de las Islas Atlánticas de Galicia (in Calle de A Palma).
A splendid viewpoint
Vigo tests the legs of those who walk its steep slopes, but the effort is rewarded. O Castro Hill, in the heart of the city centre, offers incredible panoramic views. At the top stands the old castle, with colourful gardens and a spectacular viewpoint. The Vigo estuary lies at the foot, with the Cíes Islands as a backdrop.
Porta do Sol is also the gateway to O Príncipe street, the city's commercial golden mile, where you can visit the Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO).
From the central square you can also go to Policarpo Sanz street and García Barbón avenue, in the Ensanche, the area of urban expansion since the end of the 19th century, where you can see valuable examples of architecture such as the El Moderno building, the García Barbón theatre, the Casa de las Artes, the Casa Bárcena or the Casa Odriozola.
With more time, it's worth visiting Castrelos Park, another of Vigo's must-sees. There, in addition to strolling through its gardens, you can visit the Quiñones de León manor house, donated by the Marquis of Valladares in 1924, which houses the city's museum.
Going down to the sea from Policarpo Sanz via Colón, it is pleasant to take a break and stroll around the Náutico and A Laxe areas.
In Vigo you can also enjoy street art. The Urban Art Route already has a hundred large canvases on walls and public spaces in different areas of the city.
