Combarro: stroll among hórreos by the sea

The fishing village of Combarro is one of the most special corners of As Rías Baixas. Its historic centre, dotted with cruisers and palleiras, exudes tradition and is closely linked to the sea.

Hórreos (raised granaries), sailor's houses and cruisers abound in the picturesque historic centre of Combarro, located in the municipality of Poio. A charming fishing village in the Rías Baixas that is built on granite, also present in its façades, squares, stairways and streets overlooking the sea.

The largest hórreo in Galicia

In the same town as Combarro is one of the great monasteries of the province of Pontevedra, that of San Xoán de Poio. This monastery houses in its gardens the largest granary in Galicia in terms of surface area, supported by a total of 51 feet. Its beautiful church, its cloisters, a grandiose mosaic on the Way of St. James and its library are some of the jewels of this monastery, which nowadays has a guest house.

The best place to start exploring this unique and beautiful old town is the Peirao da Chousa square and then continue along its main streets, the Rúa do Mar and the Rúa de San Roque, which leads to the church of the same name.

The stone crosses are also symbols of popular Galician architecture that can be seen in every corner of this fishing village.

The hórreos, also known as palleiras, were used as granaries or pantries to store and preserve food. Today these constructions are one of the best expressions of popular Galician architecture and make up the unmistakable silhouette of Combarro.

Agriculture and fishing coexist in perfect harmony in this corner of the Pontevedra estuary. In its streets there is no shortage of fishing tools, nets and pots piled up on the seashore, where small, colourful boats rest. The stone crosses are also symbols of the popular Galician architecture that can be seen in every corner of this fishing village, like the typical fishermen's houses, with arcades and balconies overlooking the estuary.

Despite the small size of this fishing village, there are many establishments where you can sample the gastronomy of As Rías Baixas, buy souvenirs of your visit and a wide variety of craft products. After strolling through its streets, the beach of O Padrón offers one of the best views of Combarro. The hórreos (raised granaries) on the edge of the sea are the main feature of this spectacular view of the Pontevedra estuary.
