A Illa de Arousa is a natural paradise and one of the most genuine seaside towns in the province of Pontevedra. This municipality on the Arousa estuary, linked to the land by a 2-kilometre-long bridge, is initially attractive for its history and spectacular scenery, but also for the character of its people and its idiosyncrasy.
It played a key role in the industrial development of Galicia, as it was home to the first factory in the autonomous region.
Gamelas, boats, dornas, bateas, nasas, raños... are some of the names of the countless vessels, fishing gear and fishing and shellfishing gear that can be found in A Illa de Arousa and that tell us about its close ties with the sea. In the 19th century, up to seven salting and sardine fishing industries worked in the area. The small municipality of Arousa was a key element in the industrial development of Galicia, as it was home to the first factory in the autonomous community.
In terms of architecture, the Pedraserrada neighbourhood stands out, with a 100% seafaring character. It is full of typical, small, stone houses by the sea, with charming narrow streets running through them. At low tide you can walk along the rocks, where the locals moor their boats and traditional rigging.
A Illa de Arousa has 11 kilometres of beaches and small coves that have made it one of the jewels in the crown of tourism in the province of Pontevedra.
