First port to hear from America

It has a beautiful promenade with stone houses and glass galleries.

Protected from the open sea by a beautiful bay, its location is unbeatable for the shelter of passing ships. Perhaps it has to do with these exceptional conditions that in 1492 the Pinta caravel decided to arrive in this charming town to announce the Discovery of America.

The image that welcomes visitors is that of a maritime façade made up of typically seafaring houses that are maintained along the entire length of the promenade by the sea. Their large glassed-in galleries stand out and it is not difficult to imagine families looking out of their windows at the ocean a century ago.

In 1492, the Pinta caravel arrived in this charming town to announce the discovery of America.

These stone buildings form part of the old part of Baiona, recognised as a Historic-Artistic Site in 1993 and which has now become the heart of the municipality. Its streets are narrow and cobbled, dotted with noble houses and buildings with low arcades, which create a very particular atmosphere that manages to envelop those who visit them.

A must-see in Baiona is the fortress of Monterreal, whose wall was built in the 14th century during the war with Portugal and is one of the most outstanding pieces of historical heritage in the province of Pontevedra. The enclosure is open to the public and crossing its walls we will find a spectacular view over the bay of Baiona with the Cíes Islands just in front.
