Eleven products of excellence with a Protected Geographical Indication
Within the rich and varied gastronomy of the province of Pontevedra you will find a range of products with certification that guarantees their origin and quality. Beef, pork shoulder, chestnuts, honey... Discover the foods with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and fall even more in love with the flavours of As Rías Baixas.
It certifies products obtained from cattle of the Rubia Galega and Morena do Noroeste breeds, crosses between them and certain crosses of these breeds with other breeds. The PGI covers and protects fresh beef from animals born, reared and slaughtered in Galicia.
Geographical area
The production and slaughter area is limited to the whole of Galicia. Beef is reared in the province of Pontevedra in Agolada.
It is defined as the sprouts of vegetables of the species Brassica rapa, L., var. Rapa (commonly known as turnip), of the varieties corresponding to the ecotypes of Santiago de Compostela and Lugo. The name 'turnip greens' refers to the leaves and stalks harvested during the growing season of the plant.

The Geographical Denominations Aguardiente de Hierbas de Galicia, Licor Café de Galicia and Licor de Hierbas de Galicia protect the traditional spirits made from the spirits covered by the Geographical Denomination Orujo de Galicia.

It covers eau-de-vie or orujo made from bagasse collected from vineyards located in the geographical area of the Autonomous Community of Galicia.
In Pontevedra, aguardiente is produced in the Rías Baixas sub-area, which covers the municipalities of Cambados, Ribadumia, Meaño, Arbo, O Rosal, Ponteareas, Meis and Tomiño.
The indication is reserved for fruit obtained from the native Galician cultivation of the European chestnut tree (Castanea sativa, Mill.) intended for human consumption and marketed fresh or frozen. It has a sweet taste and a firm, non-floury texture. Once harvested, the fruit has between 50 % and 60 % moisture content.

In the province of Pontevedra the harvesting areas are the districts of Tabeirós-Terra de Montes and Deza and the municipalities of Cerdedo-Cotobade, A Lama, Campo Lameiro and Cuntis.
The Protected Geographical Indication Lacón Galego, which refers to the cured forelegs of pigs, protects this traditional product.

Both the production and processing areas cover the whole of the Autonomous Community of Galicia. In Pontevedra, the pig-breeding area covers the region of Deza, especially the municipality of Lalín.
According to its botanical origin it is classified as: multi-flower honey, single-flower eucalyptus honey, single-flower chestnut honey, single-flower blackberry honey and single-flower heather honey.

The production, processing and packaging area of the honeys covered by the Protected Geographical Indication 'Miel de Galicia' covers the entire territory of the Autonomous Community of Galicia. The producing municipalities in Pontevedra are Lalín and As Neves.
This is a traditional Galician sweet whose basic ingredients are almonds (= 33 %), sugar (= 33 %) and egg (= 25 %). The 'Tarta de Santiago' can be made in different sizes and is presented in a round shape, covered with icing sugar and with a figure of the Cross of the Order of Santiago as a typical sign of identity. When cut, it is golden in colour, with an almond flavour and a spongy, grainy texture.

The geographical area of the Protected Geographical Indication 'Tarta de Santiago' covers the whole of the Autonomous Community of Galicia.
The wines of this Protected Geographical Indication are whites and reds with aromas that are frank, in which the characteristics of the raw material from which they come can be appreciated, with moderate alcoholic graduations, floral and fruity aromas and with a good and balanced acidity.

The geographical area of the Protected Geographical Indication Ribeiras do Morrazo covers the municipalities of Cangas, Bueu, Marín, Moaña, Poio, Pontevedra, Redondela and Vilaboa.
The wines obtained are light, clean, bright and well covered with colour in the visual phase; with frank aromas in which the characteristics of the raw material from which they come can be appreciated, with moderate alcoholic graduations, with floral and fruity aromas; in the mouth they are smooth, fresh, tasty and balanced and, finally, with small touches of acidity.

The production area of this appellation is made up of the land suitable for grape production in the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña. In the province of Pontevedra it includes Catoira, Valga and Pontecesures.
The product covered by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) 'Patata de Galicia' is defined as the tubers of the species Solanum tuberosum, L., of the cultivated varieties kennebec, agria and fina de Carballo, intended for human consumption. The first mention of potato cultivation in Galicia dates from an early date: before 1607, potatoes had been grown in the market garden of the Recollect monastery of Herbón.

Galician bread is a bread with a hard, crusty, spongy and irregular crust made by hand from soft wheat flour, some of which comes from wheat grown in Galicia from native Galician varieties and ecotypes (commonly known as 'country wheat' or 'Galician wheat'). Its production is characterised by the use of sourdough and a large quantity of water, as well as long fermentation and baking times.

The indication covers the whole of the Autonomous Community of Galicia. In the province of Pontevedra, the bread produced in O Porriño, Pontevedra and the Deza region is particularly well known.
