Back to the Belle Époque

The spa Balneario de Mondariz, a historic resort in the province of Pontevedra, has been internationally renowned for the excellence of its waters and for having preserved its early 20th century atmosphere

Mondariz-Balneario is the smallest municipality in Spain and one of the most special spots in As Rías Baixas. This spa, which has been honoured as the best in Spain on several occasions, began to be popular in the late 19th century, the Golden age of spa resorts all around Europe. Today, the building still keeps its former splendour.

This spa resort with more than a century of history offers health, beauty or wellness treatments using the most modern techniques. Having more than 3,000 m2 devoted to relaxation and leisure, the Palacio del Agua is a large spa designed to be enjoyed alone, with a partner, in a group or in family.

The most important building of the complex is the Gran Hotel, designed by the famous architect Jenaro de la Fuente.

Mondariz’s splendour

The spa would live is own “Belle Époque”. Distinguished and prominent cultural and political figures of the time, such as Castelao, Queen Isabella or Emilia Pardo Bazán stayed at the spa, where they would enjoy a peaceful and charming atmosphere. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, the village went into a decline, which reached its peak after a fire destroyed the hotel in 1973. Today, Mondariz-Balneario revived and has adapted to the new century.

The spa also offers an 18-hole golf course located in beautiful natural surroundings. One of the figures that played an important role in the history of thermalism in Mondariz was Domingo Blanco, the village's doctor, who rediscovered the spring of Troncoso in the 19th century and began to use its waters for therapeutic purposes.

THE SPRING OF A GÁNDARA

Enrique Peinador had heard about these properties and visited the springs in the province of Pontevedra to build a spa. The origin of the spa Balneario de Mondariz dates back to 1872, when the Peinador brothers, Enrique and Ramón, discovered the spring of A Gándara.
