River beaches to enjoy a refreshing summer

The banks of the rivers Miño, Lérez, Deza, Verdugo or Valga offer interesting leisure and swimming options to be enjoyed in the province of Pontevedra

08/06/2020

From north to south, the province of Pontevedra offers a wide range of alternatives for people who prefer to enjoy fresh water on hot days. Going for a swim in one of the many river beaches on the banks of the rivers Miño, Deza, Lérez, Verdugo or Valga, among others, is the perfect opportunity to get away from our daily routine in As Rías Baixas accompanied by your family or friends.

Ecosystems included in the Natura 2000 Network

On the banks of the Deza River, we find the A Carixa River Beach, a good option to spend your leisure time in Vila de Cruces, a town that also has public swimming pools. In the same town, you can visit the Abeseiro de Toiriz River Beach, with two bathing areas, one for adults and the other for children, which is part of the nature area Os Sobreirais do Arnego. The Deza River is the main attraction of the place of Pozo do Boi (Lalín), with a nearby oak grove having a recreational area perfect for picnics and a playground.

Liñares, a river beach of landscape interest located in the town of A Estrada, is ideal for swimming and playing, as well as O Areal de Berres. Next to a small reservoir on the Valga River, we find A Ponte River Beach, including a sandy area, a woodland, spaces for picnic, a playground and sports courts. Near the mouth of the Ulla River, you can discover a rich wildlife with ecosystems of great ecological value, included in the Natura 2000 Network and having its own recreational area, Vilarello, where visitors can have a good time.

A Calzada, the only river beach with a Blue Flag in Spain

This river beach has maintained this certificate since 2015. It comprises a small stone reservoir surrounded by a woodland of birches, chestnut trees and oaks, which makes it a perfect place to have a swim. Nearby is the Cerdedo River Beach, by the Lérez River, with a swimming pool for children. Further south, close to the village of Fornelos de Montes and by the Oitavén River, is the Ponte Vilán River Beach, which boasts a small recreational area.

A small pier is the access to the swimming area of Cabanelas, on the banks of the Umia River, in the village of Meis, which boasts an exceptional relaxing area with a cascade, Pago Negro, ideal for kayaking lovers. This river also provides crystal-clear waters to the area of Pontearnelas, in the town of Ribadumia, and the Verdugo River creates the beach of Pontesampaio as it flows through the town of Pontevedra. In this town, you can also swim in Monte Porreiro, a semi-urban area with plenty of amenities to be enjoyed by visitors.

Hiking trails, windmills and stunning views round off the offer

Close to a restored watermill is the Luneda River Beach, in the village of A Cañiza, a space with separate swimming areas for children and adults. The area of A Maceira, in the village of Covelo, located at the confluence of the rivers Fofe and Tea and close to a small islet with beautiful trees, is also worth visiting. Once in the village of As Neves, you can visit Santa Mariña and the Portomaior River Beach, which is part of the hiking trail Sendero de los Pescadores (Fisherman's Path), a 3.5-kilometre route where you can admire different native tree species, several pesqueiras (traditional stone constructions used for catching the lamprey) and old smuggling control points.

Having its own recreational areas with a picnic place, a river beach and a fishing area, the Sela River Beach is a great choice on the banks of the Miño River and very close to the ones of San Xoán and Arbo, with crystal-clear waters and a beautiful path with stunning panoramic views. If you go further west, in the town of Ponteareas, you find A Freixa Beach, located in a relaxing place, where you can practice all kinds of sports, and the green areas of As Partidas, Os Remedios and A Moscadeira, three excellent bathing areas close to the Tea River.

Well-known for its thermal offer, the village of Mondariz also has areas for swimming, such as O Val, and for the practice of naturism, like the area of Ceo, surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Further to the south, in the surroundings of the old town of Tui, you can visit Areeiros or the calm waters of the Penedo River Beach. And, close to the mouth of the Miño River, in the town of A Guarda, is A Lamiña, surrounded by a relaxing pine-wood forest, and O Codesal, with calm waters.
