The new Christmas lights fill the Soutomaior Castle with magic and tradition

For the first time in history, the fortress is decked with sustainable lights and decorations, and offers outdoor leisure activities

The Christmas decoration in the Soutomaior Castle focuses on traditions, universal values and imaginary worlds of children. The Deputación de Pontevedra has switched on these spectacular sustainable lights using 25,000 LED lamps.

For the first time in history, the fortress will be decorated at Christmas, becoming a place full of magic and hope, decked with sustainable elements. Moreover, in the castle different surprises and leisure activities will be offered to groups of cohabitants. The President, Carmela Silva, accompanied by the Mayor of the municipality of Soutomayor, Agustín Reguera, and representatives of the Provincial Government, were present at the inauguration, in which a group of students from the municipality also participated.

In this event the “postman of whishes”, a character that will be at the castle during the Christmas holidays, showed them the different activities available at the castle until 6th January, which can be enjoyed outdoors, in the garden. This way, they found out that the mill is fully working this Christmas, since it is producing the wheat used for making all desserts around the world. There, visitors can see the bags with the names of the desserts and their recipes, such as the Spanish roscón de Reyes (ring-shaped cake traditionally eaten on 6th January), the Mexican bienmesabe (sponge cake) and the Italian panettone.

Surrounding the moat, there are reindeers and deers illuminating the garden before entering the parade ground, in which a big letterbox was placed. There, the postman asked the children who attended the event to write down three wishes for 2021 in the postcards received at the entrance and to think about them closing their eyes and looking at the sky. As soon as they opened their eyes, the tower of O Conde and the tower of Homenaxe were lighted up with 25,000 LED lamps. In these areas, there are Christmas decorations and particular floral arrangements.

The initiative carried out by the Deputación de Pontevedra in the castle is aimed at offering families and, particularly, children different activities around this historical and cultural building, which was turned into a museum in 2018, with innovative and interactive elements. This leisure proposal has been made with sustainable elements and is intended for groups of cohabitants, who live a true tourism experience in the castle during this Christmas. Families can enjoy it until the Epiphany (January 6th), from 10 am to 7 pm, except Mondays and public holidays, when the Soutomaior Castle will remain closed.
