Noticia visitas guiadas al jardín de excelencia internacional en camelia del Castillo de Soutomaior

Guided tours to the International Camellia Garden of Excellence of the Soutomaior Castle will be launched again

Tours will start this Saturday and Sunday, 27th and 28th February, and will take place every weekend in March

Now that the camellia is in bloom and there are fewer restrictions to mobility in the health area of Pontevedra-O Salnés, the Deputación de Pontevedra has launched again guided tours to the International Camellia Garden of Excellence of the Soutomaior Castle. For the third consecutive year, the provincial institution organises these botanical visits, which will start this Saturday and Sunday, 27th and 28th February, and will take place every weekend in March. However, the number of visitors will be limited and tours will be adapted to the circumstances and to the evolution of the pandemic.

Camellias named after women

People will get to know all the camellia varieties growing at the International Camellia Garden of Excellence of the Soutomaior Castle – the latter also obtained the Observer science tourism distinction – , its origin, its preservation and its particular features. Moreover, for the first time and just when the Deputación launches a varied programme to mark the International Women’s Day (8th March), this year visits to the "garden of camellias named after women" will be included in the tours.

In 2020, a group of camellia varieties named after women were planted in a new space created in the garden of the Soutomaior Castle. The first one was ‘Maria Vinyals’ and in the same year other varieties, dedicated to Rosalía de Castro, Bella Otero and Jane Andersen, were added to the collection.

Also for the first time the tea plantation in the gardens can be visited. Moreover, during this tour the different types of tea, their history and their main benefits will be explained.

Tours to the camellia garden of the Soutomaior Castle, guided by an expert, will take place every Saturday and Sunday at 12 a.m., will last an hour and a half, and will cost between €1.50 (reduced price ticket) and €3 (standard price ticket). People interested can buy their tickets at the Soutomaior Castle’s website (https://castelodesoutomaior.com).
