Antiguo Monasterio de San Salvador de Camanzo
Camanzo (San Salvador)36587 Vila de CrucesPontevedra
This monastery of the Order of Saint Benedict was founded in the 10th century by Count Gonzalo and his wife Tareixa. Originally it belonged to a community of monks and then it was passed to Benedictine nuns. Queen Urraca left various bequests in her will in favour of this monastery, which became part of the Monastery of San Paio de Antealtares in Compostela in 1516.
The church was built in 1166 during a period of prosperity for the monastery. The Monastery of Carboeiro in Silleda was also prosperous in the 12th century and was completed during this time. Today there are only a few remains of the building left, such as the arcade of the chapter house. The main doorway is adorned with semicircular archivolts and four angels depicted with open arms, as well as another figure blessing. There is a figure of the Saviour in the tympanum made by the school of Compostela.
