Neveras de Fixó
FixóMillarada (San Amedio)ForcareiPontevedra
The snow wells of Fixó in the town of Millerada are part of the medieval Monastery of Aciveiro. They consist of two large round holes similar to water wells where snow is deposited. They were used by monks in the 18th century and became one of the largest parts of their income. Initially they were for private use only, but the monks established a snow business afterwards in which the wells were used for food preservation and even medical purposes. They are situated in the Mountains of Candán, which have been included in the Natura 2000 network and are a part of a route that leads to the abandoned village of Grovas. They can be visited throughout the year.
