Castelo de Sobroso
The castle, formerly called ‘Soveroso’ in account of the sobreiras (cork oaks) living in the surrounding area, is located in a rocky promontory in the hill of Monte Landín, 334 meters above sea level. The existence of Castillo de Sobroso was first documented in ‘Historia Compostelana’, an historical source of great relevance during the 12th century. It alludes to the time in 1117 when Queen Urraca was besieged in this fortification by her sister Theresa, countess of Portugal, and her son Alfonso VII until she eventually fled to Compostela seeking the help of archbishop Gelmírez.
Today the castle is made up of three parts. An outer wall circles the castle very closely, which provided little room to the garrison. In some sections it retains the original path from the 12th century. The residential area has two floors, the first of which used to accommodate the guard and defensive troops. The 13-metre keep protects the only sector of the castle that could receive an attack. All three parts combine into an imposing exterior due to the varied heights of the three overlapping structures.
The castle is surrounded by a large forest park that covers 30 hectares of wooded hills, where 40 different species of trees live and a beautiful botanical path can be enjoyed by visitors. There they will find different technological interpretive panels which offer information about the natural resources of this gorgeous path: ‘a world under our feet’, ‘lichen: a symbiotic relationship’, ‘oaks’, ‘camphor trees’, ‘fruit trees: plant reproduction’, ‘cork oaks: adapted to fire’, and ‘holly: a miniature ecosystem’.
