Trivia To catch the lamprey they use pesqueiras or pescos (constructions in a parallel-piped shape made from stone that penetrate the river flow from the two banks), already referred to in documents from the 12th century although, in all likelihood, many of them go back to the Roman age. In Pontecesures the lamprey popularly known as A dama do Ulla is caught by the valeiros (fishermen from Pontecesures) using the butrón, a creel or cylindrical net that lays on the bottom of the river waiting for its prey. As well as the Pontecesures festival, there are several food festivals in Galicia dedicated to the lamprey, the oldest and most famous of which is the Arbo one in O Baixo Miño. Origin and history It has been held since 1996Itineraries and main events during its celebration The lamprey pie contest aims to promote the traditional preparation of this dish, the sampling of lamprey with tapas and the possibility of enjoying other typical products such as polbo á feira, churrasco (barbecued meat) and wine.
