These kind of public washing places are usually open-air structures covered by a roof and fed by water from a river, fountain, aqueduct or canal. They were used as a as a communal place for women to wash clothes and utensils, but also to meet and talk about current events. The one in Caldas de Reis is fed by the same hot springs as the fountain of Burga. Both have become common places for pilgrims to stop and rest on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
