Cementerio de Pereiró
Matamá (San Pedro)VigoPontevedra
This cemetery, a work of the illustrious architect Jenaro de la Fuente, is the biggest of Vigo and popular for the richness of its sculptures. In this visit, the Dodge “Carneiro”, a perfectly preserved hearse from the 30s welcomes and invites us to discover the magnificent necropolis.
One of the most remarkable monuments is a monolith, a work of the architect Manuel Gómez Román, built by the city’s council in honour of the lawyer and writer Concepción Arenal. A mausoleum also stands out, in this case ordered by the Red Cross to the architect Julio González Pola. It pays tribute to those who died in the city after they were repatriated from Cuba and Philippines and represents a dying soldier. Another of the most impressive sculptures, due to its expressiveness, represents a group of three girls with the death taking one of them. The work was ordered by the Gil y Sarabia family to the sculptor Francisco Asorey. In addition, big names of different areas were also buried in this cemetery, like Cachamuíña, a hero of the Peninsular War; members of the Alfageme, Massó and Albo sagas, from the canning factories; José Elduayen Gorriti, a minister who was in charge of the abolition of slavery during the regency of Cánovas; or Heraclio Botana, a worker’s leader that was executed in 1936 in this cemetery.
