For centuries water has heated minerals and offered its curative properties to heal body and spirit in the town of Caldas de Reis, known to the Romans as Aquis Celenis. The medicinal mineral waters of the area, hyperthermal and rich in sulphur and sodium chloride, are the most important and developed resource of the town. This type of water is the most interesting of all the mineral water spectrum due to both its temperature and composition. It is particularly recommended for respiratory and rheumatic conditions. A public thermal fountain, A Burga, was built in the historic old town in 1881, featuring two lion heads spouting water at about 50°C.
