The Portuguese Route consists of old paths running smoothly towards the north while passing through forests, fields, towns, villages and historic cities in Galicia. It is on level ground and goes through several medieval bridges.
There are many churches, convents, wayside shrines and cruceiros (stone crosses) along the route, in which the image of Saint James accompanies the pilgrim. It also runs through populated areas like the Galician Rías Baixas, with plenty of restaurants and accommodation options.
This pilgrimage is considered one of the hallmarks of European culture and although the motivation was religious at first, the influx of pilgrims from all over the world has become more of a cultural, economic and intellectual exchange.

Starting point and destination The route starts in the municipality of Tui (Galicia) and ends in Santiago de Compostela. Description of the route From the excellent historic centre of Tui (which includes a fortress-cathedral), the following stop is O Porriño, where Saint Elmo fell ill and died, after passing through two small wooden bridges, two streams and very charming landscapes. It has several buildings designed by architect Antonio Palacios. The route continues to Redondela and its impressive viaducts, which is famous for the folklore festivals of the Corpus and the Coca, and then to Arcade, near the Castle of Soutomaior, which is the Galician capital of the oyster. It also has one of the best historic bridges of Galicia in Soutomaior, which was the setting for many battles. Continuing to Pontevedra, the church of A Peregrina is shaped like a scallop shell, and in Caldas de Reis the main road is part of the route and it leads to the church of San Miguel de Valga. Finally, Pontecesures is where the Ulla River ends, and it has many freshwater fish such as lamprey, trout and salmon.Recommended material Make sure to wear comfortable clothes, have water and a walking stick.
