The region, significantly known as Tabeirós-Terra de Montes ('land of mountains'), consists of medium-altitude mountain landscapes including O Candán, one of the most extensive sierras. Its maximum altitude reaches just under one thousand metres, but the average height is enough to give it a remarkable character among the elevations of the Dorsal Gallega ("Galician spine"). The rivers Lérez, Umia, and several tributaries of the Deza originate here. The peaks are overgrown with scrubland and wild rocky outcrops. These are spaces of wide-open horizons, with few population centres. There are also some good examples of popular architecture and artistic heritage, such as the Aciveiro Monastery, now a monument hotel. The Aciveiro-Candán natural hiking trail runs through part of this area.
