Molinos de Folón y Picón
MartínO Rosal (Santa Mariña)36778 O RosalPontevedra
This group of sixty hydraulic mills from the 17th and 18th centuries were declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1998. They are divided into two distinct sections: the 36 mills along the Folón River and the 24 mills of the Picón River.
They are horizontal-wheeled watermills which can be categorised into channel mills and bucket mills. In the first case, water is directed into a space below ground containing the mill wheel. In the second, water is stored into buckets and when the wheel turns, it moves downwards into the following bucket, and so on. These mills are located on the steepest sections of the river.
Most of the mills are two-storey buildings: the lower floor has the machinery driven by water-power, and the upper floor has the grinding stones for grinding grain.
Some of the earliest mills are from the 18th century, such as the 11th one, inscribed with the date 1702. A few still have water troughs outside, such as mills number 5 and 23.
