A journey through the stone mazes
You can enjoy a pleasant walk following the route of the Campo Lameiro petroglyphs, having nine stops. In each of them, you can admire rock engravings with hunting scenes, mysterious mazes, weapons and other motifs created by our ancestors. Each point includes a small information board, which provides a better image of the marks carved on the stone.
Some of these carvings, such as the Laxe dos Carballos, are beautiful large representations depicting different scenes, and when we admire the Outeiro dos Cogoludos, we will feel the magic of the mazes from the Bronze Age. What these carvings represent is still a mystery.
The visit to the Archeological Area ends with a stop at the settlement from the Bronze Age. It is a historical recreation of great quality, with several huts, storage structures and fences for cattle, built with the same materials used by our ancestors. This recreation will help you to imagine how the Galician people lived 4,000 years ago.
Historical pieces and technology
Panels, screens, replicas and old pieces found in the excavations such as stone chippings, knives or arrowheads will guide us along our journey to the past
The exhibit, inside the building of the Campo Lameiro Rock Art Archaeological Park, gives the answers to the questions that have arisen during our walk outside. It provides information in an educational, visual, simple and attractive way. The exhibit comprises nine different areas. Emphasis should be made on the replica of a hut endowed with all the necessary elements to know how the Galician people lived during the Bronze Age, and a life-size human figure of a hunter, wearing furs to keep himself warm and carrying the weapons he used to hunt animals.
During your visit, you are accompanied by the disturbing music coming from the projection room, where a 7-minute video displayed on big screens takes back to the time these carvings were made, and explains the different theories on their meaning.
The long shape of the building, beautifully integrated in the landscape, reminds us of the figures of stags created 4,000 years ago
Your visit ends with an explanation on the importance to preserve the fragile displays of rock art so as to avoid their degradation with the passage of time.
The building of the park is another attraction of the European capital of rock art. Its long and irregular shape reminds us of the figures of the stags carved into the stone thousands of years ago. The roof of the building, with stone tiles, changes its colour with the daylight. The structure of the building is integrated in a magical landscape, where we can see scenes of some parts of our history.
To round off your day…
Besides the visit to the Archaeological Park, Campo Lameiro has much more to offer. The Lérez River runs through this town and nearby we can visit the river beach of Redonde, a perfect place to relax surrounded by oak woods. This area is endowed with tables, a playground and other facilities to enjoy the tranquility of the surrounding nature. The oak woods of Rozas and San Brais really stand out.
In addition, the natural area of the Agüeiros Hill offers magnificent views and keeps important vestiges of the past, such as the castro (pre-Roman settlement) of Penalba, one of the oldest in Galicia, dating from the 8th century BC. On the top of the hill you find the petroglyph Pedra da Serpe, and 400 metres away you can also visit the petroglyph Rotea do Mendo.
