Catedral de Tui
Pza. de San Fernando, s/nTui (O Sagrario)36700 TuiPontevedra
This cathedral is the best example of the city of Tui’s artistic wealth. It began construction in the 12th century and the layout, outer walls, north entrance and the capitals’ iconography are all in the Romanesque style. It was the first cathedral in the Iberian Peninsula to have a Gothic facade. The tympanum has different scenes associated with the birth of Christ.
Noteworthy in the interior are the altarpiece, the reliquary altar of the Relic Chapel, the Cathedral Museum and the wonderful cloister, the only Gothic one of all the Galician cathedrals. The views from the Soutomaior Tower are also outstanding, as well as the Romanesque chapter house from the 12th century.

Chronology The new church began construction in 1120 with the approval of the monarchy, and it was completed in 1180.
Two architectural styles from different periods combine in this cathedral due to restorations. Only the cruciform plan, the north entrance and some capitals decorated with rich iconography remain of the Romanesque style. The rest of the building is in the Gothic style, with the Cistercian cloister being the most noteworthy example.
The cathedral was heavily restored in 1408 because the south wall was in danger of collapse, and several Gothic graves and the defensive tower at the southwest corner were added. The tower of Saint Andrew, funerary chapel of Bishop Juan Fernándes de Soutomaior II, was added to the north side of the cathedral in 1424. It is an example of the fortress-like nature of the cathedral.
