Grapes producing golden wines
The wines under the Designation of Origin Rías Baixas are named after the area in which they are produced: the south of the Galician coastal inlets, popularly known as rías, in the province of Pontevedra. This area has a mild climate perfect for growing vineyards and producing these wines, which can be perfectly paired with seafood dishes. They can also be enjoyed as an aperitif or accompanying Galician gourmet dishes.
The Designation of Origin Rías Baixas comprises five subzones, each of them producing wine with its own distinctive features, namely O Val do Salnés, Condado do Tea, Soutomaior, O Rosal and Ribeira do Ulla. In these areas, wines are produced using grapes of the following varieties:
- Recommended white varieties:albariña, loureira blanca o marqués, treixadura and caíño blanco
- Recommended red varieties: caíño tinto, espadeiro, loureira tinta and sousón
- Authorised white varieties: torrontés and godello
- Authorised red varieties: mencía, brancellao, pedral and castañal.
White wines under the Designation of Origin Rías Baixas are dry wines with a sharp, floral and fruity aroma, and a very light and long aftertaste. The wines produced in O Rosal and Condado do Tea use the grape varieties loureira and treixadura, respectively. They have intense aromas and are slightly acid, but they are nice and pleasant wines.
